Sticks and Stones
We all probably remember the song we sang to get ourselves out of bullying situations as children: Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.
As an adult I used to think that this song was a huge lie we believed. Words DO hurt!
But then I did a little reading about the origin of the rhyme. It seems to be from the 1800s. The Christian Recorder interprets the saying to mean:
True courage consists in doing what is right, despite the jeers and sneers of our companions.
Hmmmm....sound like anyOne you know? Yes, yes, Trey may have thrown a few jeers and sneers at family members in the quest for the TV remote.....but I'm speaking of Jesus. This is an Easter story! Sticks and stones DID break His bones.....yet, the words, the names, the jeers and sneers did not keep Him from His goal: Jesus' love for you and me were worth it! :)
Jesus is our Hero who endured the cross. Do you have the courage to live for Him?
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart." Hebrews 12:1-3
