Lights! Camera! Action!

The Year:  2010
Setting:  Penn Hills, PA

Time:  New Year's Eve

Cast of Characters: Trey, Jay, Rachel, Aunt Cathy, and many, many others!

Plot Elements:
The stomach bug ran rampant through the Mitlo Family
Trey admitted to Children's Hospital to begin cancer treatment
Jay and Rachel staying with Trey
Joe and Bella need a caregiver (with a strong stomach)
Aunt Cathy (from the healthy side of PA) drives 300 miles to help relieve the friends who had been babysitting.  Little did Cathy know that "helping" involved spending New Year's Eve away from her family and alone, undecorating the Mitlo house from Christmas, untillllll Rachel enters stage left to come home to regroup from the hospital.

What was it like to spend New Year's Eve with a grieving mom?  And not just a grieving Mom, but with the strongest Mom you know?!
How can someone EVER put away someone else's decorations.......correctly?
And how is it that Jay was changing our TV channel from the hospital?! (Thank you, friends, who provided that luxury soooooo quickly!)

This was a God sized task! He had all the details taken care of!  He provided all the courage and peace humanly possible in this situation. Do you want to grow your faith in God? Listen for His voice. Just say, "Yes!"  Go where He sends you.

Christmas Eve was when Jay and Rachel - and their family and friends - received the devastating news that Trey had cancer....

Camels and Chickens

Look at your Nativity scene.  Each figure represents someone or something doing what God created them to do.  Sheep bleating, a donkey working, and wise men....doing wise things!

Why do we goof this up?  Why aren't we content and confident in being who God created us to be?  Musically gifted or shy or athletic or smart or hard working or funny or creative - or billions of other combinations.  God. Made. One. You.  Trey lived the life God gave him to live.  Yes, it included cancer, but Trey lived his life as best as he knew how.  

Our church is preparing for 18 performances of a Living Nativity this weekend.  I will giggle as I see the camels walk by:  What if the camels thought they were chickens and ran around and tried to lay an egg?!?  And what if Mary got upset because she always wanted to be an angel with the glittery wings?!?
No wrapping paper, no shiny bow.  Accept the gift God has given this world:  One beautiful, unique YOU!

Elf on the Shelf

Love it or hate it - he/she/it is here to stay!

Butttttt....what about Self on the Shelf?  Ever feel like you're the ever elusive, always in motion, attention demanding, insatiable, even naughty Self on the Shelf of life?  Not really engaging and jumping in....just posing....watching...maybe judging....always comfortable Self.
Let's start a new Pinterest page and social media campaign of Self OFF the Shelf ideas!

I just started reading a book about how we can not just show, but BE the Love of Jesus wherever we go.  What a great CHRISTmas gift - and every day gift!  Volunteer your time, visit a shut in, SMILE, offer forgiveness, don't fight the cashier who won't accept your coupon, let someone cut in front of you in traffic - WITHOUT sign language!, take the slow aisle at check out, clean your spouse's car....the list is endless!

"Trey Tuesday" - December 3, 2019

Keeping a Promise

Christmas time is filled with lots of promises from kids (and adults!) who promise they will not be naughty....empty promises of being nice while sneaking cookies or peeking at presents!

BUT....CHRISTmas is a season designed to help us remember the best Promise ever kept!  Since Adam and Eve, God had promised a Savior.  A Redeemer.  His Son.  And God ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS keeps His promises!

Jay and Rachel needed to own this since Christmas Eve 2010 when Trey was diagnosed with cancer.  Four years of treatments and surgeries and near death experiences.  Where were God and His promises then?
A promise to never leave them?  Promise Kept!
A promise to always provide for them?  Promise Kept!
A promise to be their Provider and Shield, Sustainer and Rock?  Promise Kept!
But what about 11-5-14? A day etched in my heart forever when God took Trey home?
"For God so loved the world that He gave his One and Only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16  Promise Kept!

Despite what it looks like right now, or feels like, or seems like....God IS keeping His promises!  Learn them. Share them with the people He has given to you.  Seek the Promise Keeper.   

"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus."  Philippians 4:19"He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength."  Isaiah 40:29-31

Thanksgiving Prep

House cleaned - check - well, as check as it's going to get!  :)
Is that all there is to Thanksgiving Prep?

You know you are going to be asked.....let's prepare for it now.  What are you thankful for this year?  Not a canned answer.  Not a, "Phew, they skipped me!" kind of answer, but an honest and thoughtful reply to God's provision for you.

Assuming you are thankful for your family and your friends and your health....what else has God provided for you?  Consider the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful....the expensive, the free, the treasured, and the plentiful.  The loss, the find, the sorrow, and the joy.  If you are struggling to come up with an answer, let me give you a hint.....God really, truly loves you and has a plan for your life.  He is in the midst of everything you are experiencing....the rain and the mud, the sunshine and the storms.

How can you prepare your heart to be thankful for God's plan for your life?

Hall of Fame

In the New Testament book of Hebrews, God reminds us of the many heroes who have remained faithful to God's promises through many trials and tragedies....we actually call it the Hall of Faith.  

Sometimes it is difficult to imagine what Noah and Moses and King David endured.  Thanks to personal relationships and social media we are well aware of people who still praise the Lord through their difficult journeys, long awaited prayer requests, and survival in the midst of absolute yuck.  

Can you add to the list of famous - and not so famous - faithful friends?
"By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born" Hebrews 11:23
"By faith the walls of Jericho fell" Hebrews 11:30 
By faith, Jay and Rachel confessed their trust and dependence on God's provision through Trey's life and death.
By faith, Joe and Bella remained open and honest with their feelings, trusting God's plan for their family.
By faith, Maggie's parents keep praying and praying and praying for a better solution.
By faith, Betty thanks God for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchild.

Plus Sized!

Trey would have lovedddddd the new Disney+ app which launched today - endless Disney and Pixar movies and much, much more!  Many people would know that Trey would love this app.  Trey lived out loud.  Jay and Rachel live and love out loud.

5 Years....

Five years ago today our lives changed forever.  
Jay and Rachel - We praise the Lord for your faith, your strength, your testimony!
Joe and Bella - We praise the Lord for your resilience, your joy, your trust!
Trey - We praise the Lord for you teaching us to fix our eyes on Jesus!

From Rachel:
Today marks 5 years (!!!) since our Young Warrior, sweet, baby Trey got to his forever Home! We love him, we miss him, we think of him often and laugh easily at all the memories.
Today, friends, as you go through your day, think if there is a way you can show kindness above and beyond the norm. Everyone we encounter has a story...

So earlier today I began my day by going through my Facebook memories. Tears rolling down my face, some were from sadness, but most were from being overwhelmed by the love and support from that day 5 years ago. Like Who?

Trey was silly and smart, gentle and resilient, musical and active, he loved Jesus and he loved EVERYBODY! (especially his girlfriends)  I wonder where he got those traits?  I wonder where he learned how to be Trey Douglas Mitlo?   Actually, I don't really wonder a bit!  :)

I know God crafted Trey to be uniquely Trey.
Anddddddddd I know Trey learned how to live and love by watching his family and friends around him.

Special Coffee

I had a coffee with a friend today.  You see, I drink coffee every day.  Each cup I drink is not "Special" because I have it often.  I call it "Another" cup of coffee!  :)  However, I call today's coffee, "Special" because this was a very rare opportunity to sit down together with this friend and talk about great things over coffee.  Very special indeed.

Trey had a very "Special" security blanket aka Taggie.  Believe you me, he would NOT have wanted "Another" blanket!

Have you gone out to eat lately?  Was it "Special"?  Or was it "Another"?
Do you have a "Special" pen?  Or shirt?  Or song?  Can you imagine wearing your "Special" cozy tshirt to a job interview!?  OR what would happen if you and your loved one heard your "Special" song while on a crowded elevator!?  :)

May I challenge you this week to differentiate between "Special" and "Another" in all aspects of your life?  Let's not confuse the two.

New Math

Our Father

Do you see what I see?  In the words of the familiar and comforting Lord's Prayer, I see a lot of togetherness.  That word 'together' just made some of you squirm!  Togetherness is messy!  And loud!  And unpredictable!  But it's true!  God designed us for togetherness!

If you are struggling....or celebrating....or wondering....or studying....or busy....or sad.....or happy.....or frustrated.....or lost.....or unsure...get together with a friend or a group of friends.  Find encouragement, direction, camaraderie, accountability, support, and joy by sharing life's journeys!

It's like the new math:  Division equals minus plus multiplication!



"Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:

If the Shoe Fits....

And if you like it and if it's the right size!
Then wear it!  :)

Vans or Stride Rite or Clark's or Skechers - or a million other brands in between!  Shoes come in all shapes and sizes and colors and fits and purposes!  And we enjoy them - we accept them!  Some of us actually accept LOTS of them!  :)

Rachel has been known to sport a fancy heel - OK an extraordinarily fancy heel!  Me?  Not so much!  And that's OK!  And Joe? - officially a "Giant man size 12" is a perfect fit....for him!  

What kind of shoes did Trey wear?  The same as his dress code often = nothing!   That style would not be appropriate for most of us, thank God, but it worked for Trey!

This message isn't too difficult to understand, right?  IF we are talking about shoes.....But what about understanding and accepting someone's personality?  Or music style?  Car type?  Sports team?  Tomorrow, try and find someone different than you are.  Spend some time getting to know the other person.  Don't judge.  Respect.  And enjoy!

"Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others."  Romans 12:3-5

"Trey Tuesday" - October 1, 2019

Trees

Wow!  The colors are finally beginning to let us know that summertime really truly is over.  Reds and yellows and oranges speak of Autumn even more clearly than pumpkin spice everything!

From Genesis 1 to Revelation 22 - and many, many times in between - God has used trees to tell His story, and we can consider trees as an encouragement to us and our story.

This passage reminds me of Trey.  He lived well, safely connected to the care of his parents, family, friends, and medical team.  He was refreshed by their love and attention.  He did not fear.  He lived a summer-like life with "green leaves" and no worries.  Even when the heat was on!  And thank You God, Trey's life continues to bear fruit for Christ - every season of his life!

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lordwhose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”  Jeremiah 17:7-8

We all get by with a little help from our friends!

Team Mitlo One is just like that for Trey's family.  They continue to pray and support and love out loud.  The red wrist bands still shine a bit of compassion every time I see one....even though Trey ended his battle almost 5 (five!?!) years ago!

Have you ever noticed the instant bond you have with someone wearing the same logo on a college hoodie?  Or sports jersey?  Barriers fall down and a spirit of community blossoms just by the symbols we cherish and the memories they represent.  We know the other person shares a little bit about their journey if we just make the time to notice.

Have you seen someone wearing a cross necklace at the store lately?
Does your friend's tattoo tell their story just like your tattoo tells your story?
What t-shirt did you wear today that represents a sweet memory?

Beauty from Ashes

Beauty from Ashes?  Joe and Bella!!!  :)

God has raised these 2 beautiful (and handsome) siblings of Trey from little children watching their baby brother battle cancer to 2 AMAZING teenagers taking their worlds by storm!  We are so thankful for the countless ways God has provided for them....through the tremendous love and support by MANY surrounding them throughout their lives!

Joe and Bella are both stellar students shining brightly with the love of Jesus, serving others using their unique giftings, enjoying life with their extraordinary personalities, surrounded with the fierce love of family!  As a proud aunt I could list their many, MANY recent accomplishments, but I will sum up these great "kids" in Bible verses chosen for them long ago by their parents:
Joe - "Praise be to the Lord my Rock,
who trains my hands for war,
my fingers for battle."  Psalm 144:1
Bella - "She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come."  Proverbs 31:25

Are You Full of It?

Have you ever been filled to overflowing with God’s plan for your life?  Like Jay and Rachel as they managed Trey's treatments and procedures and symptoms and oh yeah - while juggling 2 other growing children at the same time!! Their lives were full!

Their hearts were full too, though, of God’s promises!  And great faith in His provision!  Overwhelmed by His love shining though Team Mitlo One!

Because of all this fullness they were able to see and feel and know the fullness of God!

The next time you feel the fullness of life weighing you down, don’t run, and don’t hide...look for the fullness of God breaking through!

I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”  Ephesians 3:17-19

Long ago, running was for those entering battle or fleeing from danger.  Today, athletes and exercise enthusiasts use running as enjoyment.  But those of us who are short on time...and our to-do list is long....we run, run, run through our days!

Are You Exhausted?

I know I am!  It's the end of summer and the beginning of school - it's a busy season!

Are you tired?  Of course you are!  Short nights and long days make for very weary people!

Here's one for you:  Are you overwhelmed?  Not exhausted and not tired....but overwhelmed?  Psalm 61:2 - "When my heart is overwhelmed..."  Yikes!  My body and my calendar and my nerves are often overwhelmed, but my heart?  Hmmmm....what overwhelms my heart?  

Trey's battle with cancer was verrrrrry overwhelming!  What did we do with the burden our hearts were carrying?  We loved Jay and Rachel and Joe and Bella and Trey through it all!

May our hearts be overwhelmed for others in their journeys - and may our strength be in Jesus, our endless source of support, our Rock, "When my heart is overwhelmed, l
ead me to the Rock that is higher than I."  Psalm 61:2

Pray for Me

Isn't that a wonderful request to hear from a friend or loved one? The words can mean, "I value you. I trust you. I believe in your faith in God." During sickness, personal struggles, tragedy, and mounting fears, we break down our walls of isolation and welcome the power of prayer.

Imagine a child with a secret. Or a plea. Or a fear. Can you feel the child's hope and relief in approaching a parent? Anticipating comfort. Seeking wisdom and direction. Trusting for the very best outcome. 

Crawl up in to the loving arms of our Heavenly Father. Go ahead. Tell Him what's on your mind. On your nerves. On your heart. Tell Him....and then listen to Him.  Believe He will take care of you!

"In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From His temple He heard my voice; my cry came before Him, into His ears."  Psalm 18:6

What would happen if we all slowwwwwwed down a bit and hesitated before we reacted to social media?  Would you even remember what you had wanted to click on?  Would you know what you complimented - or complained about?  Do you know which organizations you "follow" and what they stand for?  Can you name them?  In how many groups are you realllllllllly a member?

Instead, what if we intentionally reached out to those people personally and told them that you liked their photo....and what you liked about it.....or talked to them about how you are praying for them?

Enjoy the virtual scroll, but don't forget the personal touch.

It’s Still July!

We still have 24+ more hours left in the month of July!  Many hours left to enjoy the beautiful sunshine, the lengthy days, the evening bonfires, and the sun kissed cheeks of kids exhausted from swimming.....without the doomsday feeling that August can bring....back to school, shorter days, cooler temps, and the holiday rushes!


Too many friends are being bombarded with one event after another lately, with no time in between to celebrate, grieve, or process.  Let's take a moment to press the PAUSE button on life......Stop and smell the roses......and the watermelon.....savor the flavor of fresh veggies....sit a little longer in your beach chair.....and spend some quality time with your loved ones!  <3

Go Back....

In I Kings 19:15 God spoke to Elijah after a time of hard work and exhausting circumstances: "Go back the way you came".  

I can hear Elijah now:  Wait!  Whaaaaaat?  Go back!?!?  God, You want me to go BACK through all that heartache and pain?!

Imagine God saying that to Jay and Rachel:  Go back the way you came through your son's journey through cancer.  Gulp.

Insert your own name and circumstance:  _____________, go back through _________________.  Ouch.  Buttttttt.......

What if we focus on the lessons learned, a new depth of faith, closer relationships, and wisdom gleaned if we only dare to gaze backwards?

God is always always always up to something good!  When was the last time you looked back and thanked Him?

"I will consider all Your works and meditate on all Your mighty deeds.  Your ways, God, are holy.  What god is as great as our God?"  Psalm 77:12,13

Watermelon in January?

There's no comparison - a January watermelon is NOT a July watermelon!  The flavor and aroma are sooooo much better in season! 

Trey would often eat the "filet" of the watermelon (and strawberry) - the most tender and juiciest tip!  Trey knew how to savor the moment and seize the opportunity!

Handicapped?  Disabled?

When you think of Trey running around heaven, does he still have cancer? 

What about your dear friend who is crippled with arthritis?  Will he/she be chasing after Trey?

And what about all the soldiers maimed in battle?

Will each of their broken bodies be made to look "normal"?  New?  

Honestly I wrestle with this.  I don't struggle with God's Word about Heaven.  I struggle with our culture's definition of what is good.  And what our goal is.

Those who are disabled accept help from others a lot of times.  They are also more open and honest about their disabilities.  They tend to live with a more vulnerable point of view.  

Those without disabilities tend to be prone to live private, proud, and self-sufficient lives.  

Hmmmm.....which life sounds more like God's plan for "loving one another"? John 13:34  Which life celebrates Psalm 139:14"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

When you look in the mirror in the morning, consider who God Himself created you to be.  Disable yourself of your agenda and surrender your handicap - yourself - to the life God has planned for you!  

"His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence." 2 Peter 1:3

"Trey Tuesday" - July 2, 2019

Sunshine

Trey sang a precious rendition of, "You are My Sunshine".  The words might not have been in the correct order - or intelligible! - but his sentiment was heartfelt!  :)  Hospitals, doctors, treatments, school - Trey brought his God given sunshine wherever he went!

Sunshine: brightness, warmth, strength, light, cheer, power, etc.

Can’t Catch Me!

A dear neighbor pointed out this week that you can’t capture the beautiful dance of lightning bugs in a regular photograph.  Their tiny lights in the vast darkness just have to be admired with our eyes.

I experienced the same phenomenon yesterday while I was feeding my grandson a bottle.  I held him with one hand and I held the bottle with the other hand....And then his two sweet little hands grasped onto my fingers. Where was my phone!? How could I capture this precious moment?  I couldn't!  With no one else around, God reminded me to capture His gift in my heart and treasure it without a photo.

It might be roller coaster thrills or sweet strawberry aromas....or it may be something much bigger.....deep pain, intense fear, or endless anxiety....we just can't comprehend them with our human minds.  But please know that God's presence and provision surround you.  You cannot see them.  You cannot hear them.  But we can savor them.  Cling to Him.  Count on Him.

Caught Off Guard

I was soooooo excited for Father's Day this year!  My daughter and her husband just had a baby, so this was a first Father's Day for my son-in law!  And it was also a special day for my husband, the new Pop Pop!  Dinner plans and gifts and cards were all in place.  Until.....

A woman at church on Sunday morning asked me if I was going to see my Dad for Father's Day.  My world stopped spinning for a minute.  MY dad?  I was so excited for my husband and son-in-law, I didn't have a place in my mind for not seeing my dad for Father's Day!!!  You see, my dad passed away 2 years ago.  After a quick moment of awkward silence, my well wisher offered sweet condolences for my loss.  In my heart I then took a precious stolen moment of savoring sweet memories of my dad and honoring his fun and wacky ways!

Jay asked me a question today about a Trey memory.  It was breathtaking at first to receive a text with Trey's name in it....but then it was a sweet walk down Memory Lane!  Don't be afraid to mention the name of a loved ones who has passed away.  Ask a question.  Share a memory.  You are blessing those who grieve with the love of Jesus.

Team Mitlo One

We've all had some very emotion-filled days lately:  celebration, trauma, grief, anticipation, fear, relief, anxiety, desperation, and much much more!  

Throughout Trey's life and death and strong days and weak days and silly days and sick days and sad days and sweet days, God's presence and provision have been displayed through the love and support of Team Mitlo One family and friends.  

Who is your "Team"?  Who loves and supports you in your journey?

Team Mitlo One was created to unite the support of Trey and his family in love, prayer, and encouragement  How can you join - or create - a Team near you to love, pray for, and encourage someone with the love of Jesus this week?

Resolutions

How are you doing on your New Year's Resolutions?  Do you even remember what they are?

Some people chose a word for the year.....Mine this year is steadfast:  resolutely or dutifully firm and unwavering.  My instinct is to to try harder at being steadfast.  Focus better.  Worry about it more.  But being steadfast in seeking God is not achieved that way.  And trying harder is not how to receive a better prayer life, more trust, better health, deeper faith, genuine kindness, safer children, unconditional love and compassion, or greater peace and joy.  It's not about us......We need to ask Jesus how we can reach our goals:

How do Jay and Rachel and Joe and Bella live each day without Trey?

Word Economy

When was the last time you wrote a report for work and someone said, "Great start....now write more...and more....and more.  You need to fill at least 10 pages!"  Can you imagine how few people would actually read beyond the first page?  Communication experts currently recommend capturing your entire email message in the Subject Line because few people open and read emails anymore!  It is time to practice good Word Economy - communicating your message in a few powerful words.

Let's see....who could help us with this?  Trey?  Um no.  Trey used a LOT of words...often...to tell his stories, express his wants, and compete with Joe and Bella!  :)

Jesus sets the example for us.  We are able see and feel clearly His passion and purpose and message.

"Trey Tuesday" - May 21, 2019

Why Bother?

We sing songs every Sunday.  Sometimes people raise their hands.  Some people clap or dance.  And a few look upward - or downward - or inward while singing.  What is up with all these motions?  True worship is about praising God!  Lifting Him above all the messes that we trip over all day everyday in our lives.

I often lean toward Psalm 150:  "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord."  I imagine dogs barking, frogs croaking, and birds singing all as a choir proclaiming the greatness and wonder of our Creator God!

But for God's people?  Let's claim God's Word and the power in praising His Name!
Psalm 149:9 says, "This is honor for all His godly ones." "May the praise of God be in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands," Psalm 149:6

"Trey Tuesday" - May 14, 2019

Just You Wait and See!

Trey's birthday was Sunday.  He would have been 11 years old!  Baby Trey at 11 years old - I literally cannot imagine it!  However, in my heart I know Trey would still be the same wonderful boy - living life to the fullest!

My mom/Jay's mom/Trey's grandma, often imagines Trey in heaven running and playing and mayyyyybe shouting commands at the angels!  :)

But can you hear Trey - cheering Joe and Bella and Jay and Rachel - and the rest of us on?  He's shouting for us to, "Hang in there - Just you wait and see how wonderful heaven is!  Come on and run with me down the gold streets!  It's so shiny and beautiful!  I can't even move the pearly gates!  (I'm sure he has tried!)  And I have soooo many friends here!  But my bestest friend is Jesus!  Come meet Him!"

Press on friends.  The best is yet to be!

"Trey Tuesday" - May 7, 2019

Sticks and Stones

We all probably remember the song we sang to get ourselves out of bullying situations as children:  Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. 
As an adult I used to think that this song was a huge lie we believed.  Words DO hurt!

But then I did a little reading about the origin of the rhyme.  It seems to be from the 1800s.  The Christian Recorder interprets the saying to mean:
True courage consists in doing what is right, despite the jeers and sneers of our companions.

Hmmmm....sound like anyOne you know?  Yes, yes, Trey may have thrown a few jeers and sneers at family members in the quest for the TV remote.....but I'm speaking of Jesus.  This is an Easter story!  Sticks and stones DID break His bones.....yet, the words, the names, the jeers and sneers did not keep Him from His goal:  Jesus' love for you and me were worth it!  :)

Jesus is our Hero who endured the cross.  Do you have the courage to live for Him?

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."  Hebrews 12:1-3

"Trey Tuesday" - April 30, 2019

Mayday!

Mayday!  Mayday!  Mayday!  A distress signal shouted 3 times in a row is vastly differently from the International Day of Workers (and/or honoring flowers) held on May 1 and is known as May Day.  One cries of needing help, the other a day of celebrating!

Are you ever misunderstood?  Do your words not quite express your intention?  Maybe it's time we listened to each other a little better.  Not just hear each other utter words, but truly understand the meaning behind what is going on.

Is there fear behind the nervous chatter?
Is there hurt fueling the accelerated tone?
Is the speaker testing your confidentiality?

Before He was crucified, Jesus went out to pray.  Some of His last words....What was He saying?   Did He shout, "Mayday!  Mayday!  Mayday!!"?  Not at this point.  He prayed, "May Day!"  He prayed for His workers!  What was on His mind as Jesus spoke to His Father God just hours before His death on the cross?  YOU!  Each one of us, thousands of years later, to boldly live out His life giving gospel message of hope!  Are you listening?

"I in them and You in Me--so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that You sent Me and have loved them even as You have loved Me."  John 17:23

"TreyTuesday" - April 23, 2019

That's the Point.

Trey spoke in exclamation marks!!  Whether he was happy (!) or sad (!) or tired (!) or silly (!!!!!!), there was no doubt, Trey lived his short little life out loud!

I rarely watch an entire YouTube or Facebook video....I catch the message in the first 10 seconds and move on.  Except.....for one performer who speaks my language!  :)
Darlene Davenport cracks me up!  (for the older crowd, she solely re-enacts
Dean Martin and Victor Borge's act).  I now read sentences and books with a new appreciation of punctuation!  :)

Think about how Jesus used punctuation.  Listen to the difference on Good Friday....
"My God, My God, Why have You forsaken Me?" to "It is Finished."  The finality in His statement takes my breath away.  He has the Authority.  And the Assurance.  To confidently declare:  My work is done.  Your sins are paid for.  The penalty is on Me.

Period.  Period.

"He is not here; He has risen, just as He said."  Matthew 28:6

"Trey Tuesday" - April 16, 2019

Once and For All

Maybe this saying reminds you of a threat a parent issued to you as a child.  "Dad decided once and for all that we will not have ice cream for dinner!"  Or maybe it was a boss telling you he/she would tolerate a discussion for the very last time. "Once and for all, we are NOT moving to a 4 day work week."

However, this Trey Tuesday, I'd like you to stop and consider the finality of personal things.  The finality of life....losing Trey.  The finality of seasons....winter willllll be over soon!  This Easter season, consider that Jesus took allllllllllllllllllll your/my/our sins - for allllllllllllllllllllllll time - and paid the penalty between us and God forever!  He cleared the Way for us to stand faultless before God!  Once and for all!  :)  

Consider the finality of Jesus' love for you:
Once Forever
The Final Act
Finally
Permanently
Settled
Conclusively
So as to end uncertainty.

"We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."  Hebrews 10:10

"Trey Tuesday" - April 9, 2019

A Challenge

As Easter approaches, I offer you a challenge:  Will you consider this passage of Scripture - one section per day - as we look toward Palm Sunday this weekend? 

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses...." You don't need to face life alone.  Are you surrounded by those who keep you close to God?

"let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles."  Do you throw off temptations?  Or do you dance with them?  Do you try to stay far from sin, or do you tiptoe as close to the line as possible?

"And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us..."  Do you run YOUR race?  Or do you measure your life against others?

"fixing our eyes on Jesus, the Pioneer and Perfecter of faith."   What is your focus?  Who are you listening to?  Who are you living for?

"For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."  Where do you find your joy?  Temporary happiness or true, eternal joy?

 "Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."  Consider Jesus.  His love for you.  His sacrifice for you.  That's a challenge you can take to heart every day!
